QR codes have appeared on practically every print ad in the News & Record and Winston-Salem Journal over the last six months. Most of them point to a desktop website that does not render on a phone, which means the few people who scan them get a broken experience and never scan another one.

    Where QR Codes Actually Work

    • Vehicle wraps and yard signs: Triad homeowners and drivers cannot type a long URL but can point a camera. A code on the back of a Greensboro home services van turns the vehicle into a lead source.
    • Storefront windows after hours: A code linking to your hours, menu, or appointment scheduling captures interest from foot traffic when you are closed.
    • Direct mail: A code that links to a video walkthrough of a service, a special offer, or a calendar booking page outperforms a printed phone number for prospects under 40.
    • Trade shows and chamber events: A code on a booth banner that adds you to the prospect's contacts or pulls up your portfolio works far better than a stack of business cards.

    Where QR Codes Fail

    • Billboards on Business 40 or Wendover: Drivers cannot scan codes safely at speed. The codes are essentially decoration.
    • Codes that link to a desktop site: If the destination is not optimized for mobile, the scan was wasted.
    • Codes that link to a homepage: If your code is on a flyer about water heater installation, send the scan to a water heater landing page, not your homepage.

The Setup Rules That Make QR Codes Pay

    • Use a tracking redirect: Generate codes that pass through a service like Bit.ly or your own URL shortener so you can count scans by campaign.
    • Tell people what to do: "Scan to schedule a free Greensboro estimate" outperforms a naked code with no instruction.
    • Print the URL too: Many Triad customers do not have QR-reading apps installed. Give them a backup short URL.

A High Point landscaping company added QR codes to their yard signs in front of completed projects. Each code links to a photo gallery of similar work and a quote request form. They added 19 booked estimates in their first season from yard sign scans alone.

QR codes only work when the destination is mobile-ready. Read why Triad businesses need a mobile-friendly site, or have our digital marketing agency design QR campaigns that actually produce leads.
